Outdoor Pizza Oven Carts: Is One Right For You

While most of us will be using our outdoor pizza ovens in a back patio or perhaps on the counter of an outdoor kitchen, there may be some occasions where you’ll want to make it a little more portable.

Most models are designed to be carried so they can be moved around the house or put into a car to take to church for a party or on your next camping trip, but if you just need to maneuver your oven around your yard or perhaps to your front driveway for a neighborhood block party, then a cart would make things so much easier!

Are There Carts For Pizza Ovens?

In general, most pizza ovens are designed to be portable. While most models just sit on feet, some higher-end models come built onto a cart or stand with wheels. Third-party appliance carts can be purchased and are designed for heavy appliances like pizza ovens.

These third-party carts are usually made from heavy-duty stainless steel like this highly rated model from Royal Gourmet, but some more “niche” models can be made from wood, like the one offered from Christopher Knight Home Store.

There are also some carts and tables made from high-grade plastic, but most pizza oven enthusiasts (me included) don’t recommend these since pizza ovens are quite heavy, awkwardly shaped, and a slight bump could send your $400 pizza oven tumbling onto the patio…along with dinner.

What Features Should I Look For In A Pizza Oven Cart?

On average, customers looking for a quality cart for their pizza oven will want to look for models with large, durable wheels that have a locking mechanism. In addition to this, you will want a cart that is large enough to fully support the size of your oven but also the weight of it.

Some people may only need a simple, cheap cart…but if you want to make sure your pizza oven stays safe and secure while being moved from place to place, then here are some features I recommend:

  • Durability
  • Size
  • Braked or Locking Wheels
  • Wheel Size
  • Sturdy Handles
  • Weight Limit
  • Accessory Storage

Durability – The best carts will be made of stainless steel (or some combination of materials) that won’t rust over time as lower quality steels might.

Size – Make sure it will fit your oven! If you have a larger pizza oven, then make sure the cart can handle its weight and fully supports your oven’s footprint.

Brakes or Locking Wheels – Some models come with brakes to lock wheels in place. This is especially handy if you have to park your oven at a slight angle (though you should try to keep it as level as possible when cooking.)

Size of Wheels – Bigger wheels will allow you to roll ovens across grass, gravel, and sand with ease! Look for models that have larger wheels that can be locked in place if needed. You don’t want smaller plastic casters when moving your pizza oven from the front yard to the backyard…and you don’t want to risk tipping your oven over because it got stuck in the grass.

Sturdy Handles – Make sure there are sturdy handles on top and easy-grip handles on each side of the cart for ease of carrying. Most carts offer both, but make sure they’re high quality! Remember, this will be moving a heavy object and you don’t want it to slip out of your hands.

Weight Limit – As I mentioned above, most models come with a weight limit. Make sure you’re your oven falls within the range of acceptable weights for the cart. Remember to take into account the added weight of fuel (wood, gas, pellets) and of the foods you’ll be preparing in your oven.

Accessory Storage – While not totally necessary, a quality cart should have at least some basic storage for fuel tanks, firewood, your ovens cover (more info on covers here and here,) and some hooks to hang utensils like a pizza peel!

How Much Does A Portable Pizza Oven Weigh?

On average, a pizza oven weighs anywhere between 70 pounds to 200 pounds. While some models are lighter, others can be quite heavy depending on their size and materials used in the construction of them.

One model, the Prima Pizza Oven, is made from high-grade stainless steel with brass burners inside. It’s very heavy and weighs over 200 pounds! People that own this model or similar highly recommend a two-wheeled cart like the Royal Gourmet model I mentioned earlier.

These two-wheeled carts allow you to only have to pick up one side so that you can move it around like a wheelbarrow. Once you set it down it won’t budge since two of the legs don’t have wheels.

Other models are made with aluminum materials instead of stainless steel, but they’re still very heavy at around 100-120 pounds when empty.

Final Thoughts

If you plan to keep your pizza oven fairly stationary then you may not need a cart. But if you want the ultimate portable pizza-making experience then consider investing in a high-quality appliance cart.

Check the charts above to make sure the base of your oven can comfortably sit on the surface of the cart and that the cart can support the weight of the oven. When in doubt always go bigger and remember to take into account the extra weight of your fuel source.

If you’re looking to get into pizza making in your backyard, here are a few recommendations (all under $400) to get you started.

Big Horn Outdoor Pizza Oven – This is a great portable model that uses wood pellets rather than logs or coals. It has a modern look, ultra-portable at just 25 pounds, and can cook a pizza in about 18 minutes. This model is affordable, usually coming in under $200, but check Amazon for current prices since it often goes on sale.

If you’re looking for a more traditional outdoor pizza oven but still has great portability, check out the U-Max Outdoor Pizza Oven. This model has an arched top that gives it a more familiar dome look and is also built into a cart, making rolling it in and out of the garage very simple. This model also uses wood logs as its heating source giving your pizza that delicious wood-fired taste.

When purchasing something that’s new to me I always try to find an “all-in-one” kit so that I know I have everything to get started without having to make multiple purchases on Amazon or multiple trips to the store. The all-in-one solution for outdoor pizza ovens is the Bertello Outdoor Piza Oven. This kit burns coal, gas, and wood and comes with a meat thermometer and a pizza peel.
